South Carolina is rich in wildlife and natural areas of which only a few are represented here. Huntington Beach State Park in Murells Creek is one of the best birding spots I know with easy watching for shorebirds, wading birds, raptors and songbirds. It also has easy views of Alligators. The main road is bordered on one side by a fresh water lake and on the other by a tidal marsh. At low tide the mudflats are very productive for many varieites of birds. The Waccamaw River is an easy place for kayaking through swamplands. The Francis Beidler Forest, an Audubon Center in Harleyville is the world'd largest tupelo-cypress forest with thousand year old trees located in Four Holes Swamp, a blackwater system of 18,000 acres with about 1800 acres of old growth. The swamp was once a site on the underground railroad and sheltered Maroons or runaway slaves. Also see the Charleston gallery for more images from the state.
